Cultured Pearl Formation

There are two methods for culturing whole pearls: bead nucleation and tissue nucleation. Bead nucleation is a insertion of a bead and a piece of mantle tissue into a mollusk to induce it to form a cultured pearl, used for saltwater oysters. Tissue nucleation implants only a piece of mantle tissue used for freshwater pearls. The mussel will deposit layers of nacre around the beat or mantle tissue.
